Pet's may end up requiring surgery for an endless amount of reasons. There are chronic issues that build up over time and there are acute injuries and illnesses that unexpectedly surprise us. Some reasons a pet may require surgery are:
- Orthopedic and ophthalmic care
- Urinary bladder and Gastrointestinal issues
- Injury and wound care
- Foreign body obstruction removal
- Masses or tumor removals
- Dental procedures
Pet surgery is similar to surgery in humans. The doctor has a consultation with the pet owner discussing what will be done in the surgery, answering any additional questions and addressing all concerns. He will inform you about the condition or illness plaguing your fur baby.
Your fur baby will be put under anesthesia and will receive an appropriate amount of pain medications to keep them comfortable before, during and after the surgery. When the surgery is complete and you come to pick your fur baby up, Dr. Wisa will discuss post-op care with you.
Oftentimes, your pet will seem especially lethargic after surgery. They may experience a loss of appetite and you may notice them sleeping longer than usual. Even when your pet wakes up, they may seem particularly “out of it”. No need to feel alarmed! These are expected side effects from the surgery. Their body is still metabolizing the anesthesia that was used during the surgery. This can actually be beneficial for the particularly rambunctious animals, to prevent them from re-injuries, let alone any new injuries.
